New Orleans needs a robust local green infrastructure economy to encourage community buy-in of public and private green infrastructure installations across the city. There have been numerous successful education campaigns to increase awareness of urban water management practices and the community is now prepared to take action on their own.

An abundant local supply of plant materials is the next step in empowering individuals, small businesses, agencies and organizations to successfully complete and maintain their water management projects. Sponge City seeks to address the current gap in access by encouraging a hyper local network of growers that are incentivized to increase supply to the public through frequent temporary markets, established nursery retail partners, and other platforms of visibility throughout the city.
